I've already reviewed the CD issue of this performance which I greatly enjoyed but I got even more pleasure from seeing it on screen. This is the guitarist's latest and newest group with some of the very finest musicians in trumpeter Guy Barker and keyboard player David Newton plus Ewan Vernal on bass and Steve Brown on drums and also introducing singer Alison Burns on two tracks.
It's a straightforward presentation with no gimmicks, just virtuoso performances, clearly filmed and well recorded. Besides the quintet tracks there are fabulous guitar solos on Stella By Starlight and Hymn A L'amour, and a delightful duet for trumpet and guitar on Li'l Darlin'. The DVD has two bonus tracks and a very enjoyable conversation between old friends Martin and Guy.

Martin Taylor - Freternity

You're not wrong - that is a blimmin' awful pun. Thankfully the jazz virtuoso more than makes up for it with the sheer quality and class of his first band project since Spirit Of Django. Collaborating with long-time friends, trumpeter Guy Barker and pianist David Newton, Taylor is in rare old form - deftly weaving basslines, comp chords and melodies with playful abandon and with no worries about who's leading who at any given point.
All this fun is hardly surprising, really, when you take into account the tracklisting, which boasts some of his all-time faves, including Hoagy Carmichael's Skylark and Hefti/Cahn's The Odd Couple. The reworking of Taylor's Chez Fernand really stands out among the many high points; originally written in an old Django Reinhardt haunt, it shows the right way to honour your musical ancestors without being browbeaten or consumed.
