Martin awards first scholarship

Martin Taylor Guitar Academy, the online guitar school, has awarded its first scholarship to a 13 year old guitar prodigy. Slovakia-born, Hungarian gypsy Andreas Varady has been playing the guitar since the age of four. Taught by his father, Bandi, Andreas plays mainly by ear and was inspired at an early age by Django Reinhardt, and later Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Bireli Lagrene. Already Varady is starting to make waves as he plays his London debut at the prestigious Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in March followed by a series of summer festivals.

Academy founder and multi-award winning jazz guitarist Martin Taylor said:

“Andreas Varady is an extraordinary musician. His guitar playing displays a maturity well beyond his years. I’m sure he’s going to become a major force in the jazz guitar world”

Following the announcement Andreas Varady commented:

“I really loved meeting Martin and playing with him last year. I’m so happy to be part of his guitar academy. It’s an honor to receive the first scholarship.”

Andreas Varady will be the first recipient of a scholarship to the revolutionary Martin Taylor Guitar Academy, an innovative video-based online music school. Students from over twenty countries learn directly from one of the acknowledged masters of solo and fingerstyle jazz guitar for a fraction of what a private lesson would cost. The Martin Taylor Guitar Academy offers guitar instruction on the most innovative technology platform available. Respected, award-winning guitarist Martin Taylor offers more than 100 HD video lessons, ranging from beginners’ basics to advanced techniques. Students at all levels can interact directly with Martin via video exchanges. Each student has opportunities to send Martin webcam videos of themselves practicing, which are personally reviewed, then paired with video responses containing Martin’s individualized instruction.

Martin Taylor meets Elvis guitarist Scotty Moore

Martin Taylor and Scotty Moore

Check out the latest video of Martin Taylor interviewing guitar legend Scotty Moore at the Chet Atkins Convention in Nashville. He is best known for his backing of Elvis Presley in the first part of his career, between 1954 and the beginning of Elvis’ Hollywood years. He was ranked forty-fourth in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

Moore played on many of Presley’s most famous recordings including “Good Rockin’ Tonight”, “Baby Let’s Play House”, “Heartbreak Hotel“, “Mystery Train“, “Hound Dog“, “Too Much” and “Jailhouse Rock“.

Scotty Moore is given credit as the pioneer of the rock ‘n’ roll lead guitarist. Most popular guitarists cite Moore as the performer that brought the lead guitarist to a dominant role in a rock ‘n’ roll band.

Although some lead guitarists/vocalists had gained popularity such as Chuck Berry and blues legend BB King, Presley rarely played his own lead while performing, usually providing rhythm and leaving the lead duties to Moore. Moore was a noticeable presence in the Presley performances, strictly as a guitarist. As a result, he became an inspiration to many subsequent popular guitarists, one of the more vocal of these being Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. Moore, being quite introverted on stage, accomplished this almost exclusively through his performance and interpretation of the music.
